Personality represents those characteristics of the person that account for consistent patterns of feeling, thinking and behaving.
The Eysenck Personality Questionnaire (EPQ) was developed by Sybil B.G. Eysenck in 1975. It is a personality questionnaire which assess a person’s personality pattern in the basis of four basic criteria or scale. In Bangladesh , the ‘Eysenck Personality Questionnaire’ was adapted by Professor Anisur Rahman and Sybil B.G.Eysenck (1980). The questionnaire has 101 items to assess four types of personality pattern. They are as below:
1. Extroversion (E): The typical extrovert is sociable, like parties, has many friends, needs to have people to talk to, craves excitement, takes chances, generally an impulsive individual. He is fond of practical jokes, always has a ready answer and optimistic. He tends to be aggressive and lose his temper quickly.
The typical introvert is a quiet, retiring sort of person, introspective, fond of books rather than people; he is reserved and distant except to intimate friends. He tends to plan ahead, “looks before he leaps” and distrust the impulse of the moment. He does not like excitement, takes matters of everyday life with proper seriousness, and likes a well-ordered mode of life. He keeps his feelings under close control, seldom behaves in an aggressive manner, and does not lose his temper easily. He is reliable, somewhat pessimistic, and places great value on ethical standards.
2. Neuroticism (N): Typical high N scorer is an anxious, warring individual, moody and frequently depressed. He is likely to sleep badly, and to suffer from various psychosomatic problems or disorders. He is overly emotional, reacting too strongly to all sorts of stimuli. His strong emotional reaction interferes with his proper adjustment, making him react in irrational, some times rigid ways.
3. Psychoticism (P): A high scorer may be described as being solitary, not caring people, often troublesome, cruel, and inhuman he has a liking for odd and unusual things, and disregard for danger, he likes to make fools of other people and to upset them.
4. Lying (L): This scale measures social desirability responses of a person, a tendency on the part of some subjects to be ‘fake good’. It also measures some stable personality factor, which may possibly denote some degree of social naiveté. When score is low, it indicating that subjects are not dissimulating.
In this questionnaire, some items have repetition in order to see consistency in subject’s responses. Although the questionnaire has 101 items, due to cultural variance, some items did not take in scoring system. It was found that total 23 items were not culturally sensitive and so they were not taken whole doing scoring (items are 8, 14, 17, 29, 31, 33, 38, 43, 46, 52, 56, 62, 63, 70, 73, 79, 83, 84, 85, 90, 94, 98 and 101).
The 101 item version of the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire (EPQ) was administrated to 544 male and female Bangladeshi subjects of different ages. The results suggested that although some items from the original British Scales were inappropriate in Bangladesh , substitute items brought the scales up to reasonable reliabilities and viable scoring key was introduces. Means and SD of reduced scale was estimated on these subjects, which is given below:-
